Producing and production leadership for an immersive artwork combining virtual production, moving image, sound and installation to explore Australia’s Black Summer bushfires.

ACROSS DISCIPLINES
Created by CJ Taylor and Robert Walton, Flashover was an ambitious, multidisciplinary artwork that brought together photography, animation, spatial sound and large-scale installation. Drawing on the experiences of volunteer firefighters during the Black Summer bushfires, the work invited audiences to encounter fire from perspectives beyond their own.
Presented within VCA's Film & Television Studio 1, the project occupied an unusual space between theatre, gallery installation and virtual production. The scale and complexity of the work required an entirely different approach to transforming a working film studio into an immersive public experience.
As Head of Artistic Operations & Planning, I led the producing and production delivery of the public presentation, overseeing planning, budgets, resources and technical coordination. Working alongside Production Manager Andy Turner and external producer StudioBento, my focus was on bringing together the many creative and technical elements into a cohesive public outcome.
I was also extensively involved in the development and rationalisation of the physical environment, working closely with the design and production teams to balance creative ambition with the practical realities of fabrication, technical integration and audience experience.
The result was an extraordinary collaboration across disciplines, bringing together artists, designers, filmmakers, researchers and technical specialists to realise a work of remarkable scale and ambition.
Flashover was subsequently recognised as a finalist in the 2025 Lumen Prize, Experiential category.
