Ways to work together.

You might be developing an event or program, planning a space, rethinking how an organisation works, or looking for someone to lead a project through.

I can help with a specific part of the work or bring several of these services together, depending on what you need.

I make ambitious things happen.

I bring the imagination to see what’s possible, the technical depth to understand what it takes, and the judgement to lead it through.

Between dreamers and doers

I’ve spent my career between the dreamers and the doers—often being both. I enjoy leading large teams and organisational functions as much as getting stuck into a difficult problem on my own. I can move from the detail of a design to the decisions that shape an organisation, and I like staying close enough to the work to understand what people are dealing with.

I’ve built teams and organisational functions, managed substantial budgets and led through change. I know how to work through competing creative, commercial and technical priorities, make decisions and turn them into practical action. Arts and culture shaped that approach; I bring it to businesses, institutions and individuals with ambitious work to do.

Helping people do their best work

I give people clear direction, the resources and support they need, and the autonomy to use their expertise. I’ve worked with people across a wide range of backgrounds, abilities, disciplines and experience levels, bringing those differences together into strong teams.

I want people to contribute, learn from each other and take pride in what they achieve. Building a team means creating the conditions for that to happen, including when the work is complex or the pressure is on. How a team works together matters to me as much as what it delivers.

Connections into action

I’m a connector. When I don’t have the answer, I know who to call. I draw on a strong network and build relationships across disciplines, recognising when a different perspective or the right specialist will help move things forward.

I’m hands-on, and I care about getting things done well without wasting people’s time or effort. I look for ways to simplify processes, resolve hold-ups and make the work run better. Whether I’m leading a team or doing the work myself, I bring the same focus on making progress and following through.

Selected experience & qualifications

My work has taken me from lighting and technical theatre into producing, programming, venues and organisational leadership. Along the way, I’ve built teams and departments, brought ambitious creative work to life and helped organisations find their way through change. These are a few of the roles and contributions that have shaped how I work.

Selected experience

University of Melbourne

Head of Artistic Operations & Planning

Victorian College of the Arts & Melbourne Conservatorium of Music

I established and lead the Artistic Operations & Planning department, bringing together producing, programming and production across both institutions. I oversee both producing and production for 500 productions each year, leading multidisciplinary teams and managing substantial budgets to bring the work from planning through to presentation.

Arena Theatre Company

Board Chair & Non-Executive Director

I work closely with the CEO on organisational strategy, artistic ambition, financial sustainability, risk and governance. Before becoming Board Chair, I chaired the Finance, Governance & Risk Committee.

Melbourne Theatre Company

Production Manager

I led mainstage productions from development through delivery, working closely with directors, designers and production departments to realise ambitious ideas within technical, financial and scheduling constraints.

Alongside production delivery, I redesigned the company’s production risk framework and assessment processes. My approach was to work through difficult design and delivery questions with creative teams, finding practical solutions that protected the artistic intent.

Australian Exhibitions at Prague Quadrennial

Head of Production

I led production delivery for Australia’s National and Student exhibitions, coordinating international logistics, technical planning and installation across multiple sites. I worked with artists, curators, technical teams and local partners to translate curatorial and design intent into achievable public presentations.

Flashover

Producer & Head of Production

I led production delivery for this large-scale immersive screen experience, bringing together multidisciplinary creative work and complex technical systems. My role spanned planning, budgeting, scheduling, technical integration and delivery coordination from development through public presentation.

Bendigo Theatre Company

Life Member · President

As President, I led organisational strategy, governance and change while remaining closely involved in creative and production delivery. My involvement also included serving as Programme Director and producing and production-managing Wicked.

Bendigo Venues & Events

Programming, venue operations and technical production

Across successive roles in technical production, front of house, operations and programming, I developed a detailed understanding of how venues work—for artists, audiences and the people running them.

I supported the commissioning and opening of Ulumbarra Theatre through technical systems testing, defect management and the development of operational and emergency-management procedures.

Festivals & independent production

Production, technical and operational roles

My festival experience includes work across 15 editions of the Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music and Bendigo Writers Festival, both from inception, alongside a venue and precinct role in the inaugural White Night Bendigo.

I’ve worked across theatres, heritage gaols, galleries, stadiums, shipping containers and public spaces. That experience has shaped a practical, adaptable approach to producing work in places that weren’t necessarily designed for it.

Good people doing difficult things together.

Integrity

Being clear, consistent and following through on what I say I’ll do. I value honesty, good judgement and decisions made with care.

Trust

I work best in environments where people can be human and honest with each other—able to ask questions, admit uncertainty and challenge an idea without fear.

Respect

For the expertise and experience people bring, and for the people who will ultimately live with the decisions we make.

Collaboration

I genuinely enjoy building things with people who bring different strengths and ways of thinking. The best outcomes are often the ones none of us would have reached alone.

You work directly with me.

I lead the work, bringing in collaborators when a project needs additional expertise or capacity.

That can mean a focused piece of work, a role alongside your team or leadership across a whole project.

Before we start, we agree the scope, responsibilities, timing and fees—so you know what you’re engaging me to do.

In good company.

Perhaps most importantly, Abe leads through listening.
“He has an excellent understanding of the relationship between artistic vision and technical delivery, which allows him to support creative teams…”
It is Abe’s commitment to his craft … and strong moral compass which make him such a joy to collaborate with.
“Abe’s pragmatic and professional approach to every production is rooted in a deeply principled and uncompromising belief in making spaces safer and more accessible to all.”

Artistic Director & Co-CEO, State Theatre Company South Australia

On working together on Touching the Void

Abe and I worked closely together on Touching the Void, an exceptionally ambitious and technically complex production that was developed and rehearsed during the uncertainty and disruption of the COVID period. It was a project that demanded adaptability, resilience and constant problem-solving, and Abe was an invaluable collaborator throughout.

What consistently impressed me was his ability to approach challenges with a solutions-focused mindset. In an environment where logistical, technical and external constraints could easily have limited creative possibilities, Abe was always looking for a path forward. Rather than focusing on what could not be achieved, he actively worked with the team to find practical, intelligent ways to realise the production's ambitions.

Abe combines strong organisational skills with a genuine generosity of spirit. He is approachable, calm under pressure, and deeply collaborative. He has an excellent understanding of the relationship between artistic vision and technical delivery, which allows him to support creative teams while also ensuring productions remain achievable and well considered.

Perhaps most importantly, Abe leads through listening. He takes the time to understand the needs of a production before offering solutions, never imposing an agenda but instead building trust through thoughtful engagement and responsiveness. His can-do attitude, coupled with his respect for artists, technicians and colleagues alike, makes him an outstanding collaborator and someone I would gladly work with again.

On collaboration and professional character

It has been my great privilege to work with Abe Watson now for many years and it’s always been an absolute joy.

Whether ideating new and exciting ways of bringing stories to audiences or navigating challenging situations (and sometimes people), Abe brings a level-headed professionalism and strength to every space in which he works. Abe’s pragmatic and professional approach to every production is rooted in a deeply principled and uncompromising belief in making spaces safer and more accessible to all. I have watched Abe work with artists and practitioners from incredibly diverse backgrounds and perspectives and have always been impressed with the way Abe navigates interpersonal spaces, often fragile ones, with care, compassion and, most importantly, diplomacy.

It is Abe’s commitment to his craft, ongoing desire to learn and grow, and strong moral compass which make him such a joy to collaborate with.
